san francisco, california, usa
A unique gathering of experts from multiple disciplines came together to evaluate the basic underlying genetic, molecular and pathophysiologic mechanisms of the metabolic syndrome/metabolic risks, endorsed by both the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. The Scientific Committee gathered a unique group of basic and clinical experts in the biology of lipid and glucose metabolism, who presented their work and discussed the challenges of translating scientific knowledge into practical applications of medicine. Biologists presented the human and animal evidence for the molecular mechanisms of metabolic syndrome/metabolic risk, including insulin action, dyslipidemia, and inflammation. Translational researchers discussed lifestyle interventions and novel therapies. The program design facilitated full engagement by young investigators. There was ample opportunity for networking, meeting senior faculty and discussing research.
